Grodno university gets QR code

The Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno has become the first facility in Grodno to bear a QR code, the university’s pro-rector for science Yuri Voitukevich told a press conference on 19 December. The Quick Response code is in essence a bar code that can be quickly recognized and deciphered using a mobile phone camera. To get the information, users have to launch a bar code scanning application (the majority of modern devices have one) and take a picture of the QR code. The QR code of the university has been generated by Yevgeny Nevgen, a third-year student of the mathematics and information science department, as part of his research project. The code is displayed by an information table placed on the university’s central wing. The QR code contains a hyperlink to the website of the university that had been developed by the author of the project, information about the location of the university wing, contact data, history, news and other important facts of the university life. Wi-Fi Internet access is available in vicinity of the information table. Yevgeny Nevgen believes the project will be interesting for tourists and Grodno residents, who would like to learn more about the city’s oldest university. The QR code is a quality mediator between the source of information and its receiver. The information delivery method boasts rapid and better quality information acquisition and storage. Since the code can be easily recognized by scanners, it can be used in retail trade, production sector, and logistics. In the future the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno may place QR codes on other wings of the university, too.
